The book Bread Givers has a lot of obvious themes throughout it; however I have in mind the theme of males being seen as more all-important(a) and more powerful than women stands out the most. As the daughters Bessie, Mashah, Fania, and Sara grow up in a poor household, they are burdened with the responsibility of devising money to support each other and their parents.
They are trustworthy for making money for food, necessities, and also for paying rent. Although their father doesnt work, he put all of the pressure on his daughters in particular during the time that they couldnt find jobs and continued to demand to dumbfound their wages. Their father spent most of his time praying and examine the Torah and treasured to find his daughters husbands who spent time praying just like he did. It was believed that women werent smart enough to study the Torah and the prayers of daughters werent important and didnt count because they werent listened to by God. It was also believed that women unless made it to Heaven because they were wives and daughters of males, and women were supposed to be servants of males who studied the Torah.



In addition, in the Smolinsky home, their father has a room all to himself that no one else is allowed to put anything in, however, if he had a son he would share his room with him. He had the best room for studying and praying of the Torah and he also had the best eating. While there would be soup for dinner, he would get the fat and also middle to eat while the women in his family only got liquid that was as clear as water.
Just because males were seen as dominant in the society, there were also other women who insulted and looked down on other women. The Smolinskys land lady was a very barbaric woman who continued to knock on their door demanding for money even while they had no income.
